Emergence

Commissioned by The Coro as part of their Incredible Journeys programme exploring the fascinating world of animal and human migration, Emergence highlights the spectacular displays of Starling murmuration.

Emergent behavior arises in a system that does not depend on its individual parts, but on their relationships to one another; it forms when a simple set of rules are followed by individuals without any central coordination. This can be seen in the breath-taking synchronised aerial choreography of Starling murmurations. While it is believed that Starlings perform these spectacular displays for protection and shared body heat, we look on in awe at the elegance of their collective presentation. There is a poetic and powerful teaching in their unspoken, coordinated, shared existence. Might we take a cue from their instinctive sensing of one another to live in a system of greater social, spiritual and philosophical connection?

Emergence presents a fleeting comprehension of a moment of connection through the boundary of order and chaos.
